Kids are probably driving their parents ‘crazy’ during school holidays, so why not visit the Ipswich Art Gallery and let them run wild in a two-story creative play space made entirely from packing tape, or let them construct their own building from foam blocks.
Visitors to the gallery could be the first in Australia to experience playing in a unique TapeScape made entirely from 56,000 metres of packing tape, now installed at the Gallery.
Designed and created by US artist and architect Eric Lennartson, TapeScape is the headline attraction in the Construction Site summer program at the Ipswich Art Gallery.
First launched in Lennartson’s home state of Minnesota in 2011, TapeScape has been recreated in San Jose, Pittsburgh, Winnipeg, New Jersey and Dubai.
“It doesn’t take much to have a lot of fun in the TapeScape,” says Eric.
“The tunnels bend, curve and warp as people play, and as the structure is a bit bouncy and slippery it gives people an experience unlike anything they are used to.
The installation in Ipswich has taken two weeks for Eric to create with a team of gallery staff and it is the first time a TapeScape has been showcased outside of the Northern Hemisphere.
Council Arts spokesman, Councillor Charlie Pisasale said TapeScape would headline the Gallery’s summer school holiday program along with the return of popular interactive building exhibits that form Construction Site.
“Gallery Director Michael Beckmann and his team have done a huge amount of work to bring Eric and his installation to town,” Cr Pisasale said.
“TapeScape is going to transform Ipswich Art Gallery like never before: it’s going to attract tens of thousands of people.
“All-day entry to the interactive exhibitions is $5 per person or $15 for a family of up to five people with children under two free.”
TapeScape is a welcomed addition to the other current exhibitions, Construction Site, Ball Run and the Blue Blocks activity.
In these exhibits, children have the opportunity to be their own architect by building cubby houses. The giant foam blocks are there for children to build whatever they can imagine.
Alternatively, their inner engineer can be released with the popular Ball Run. Children are able to create their own run using tubes and recycled materials to send a rolling ball on its way.
Ipswich Art Gallery is open daily from 10am to 5pm at d’Arcy Doyle Place between Limestone and Brisbane streets, Ipswich.
Construction Site featuring TapeScape is a fun, interactive art activity where your child can comfortably build and play in an air-conditioned environment, perfect for the summer school holidays.
There is even a special space for children under 2 to enjoy. TapeScape is on at the Ipswich Art Gallery from Monday 5 December 2016 to Sunday 26 February 2017 (closed 24 Dec to 2 Jan inclusive).
