Events in June at Studio 188

Studio 188, in the old Baptist Church at the Top of Town is a vibrant, cultural, creative space for young people and host to a great array of shows in June.

FRIDAY June 10

Supported by Sean Gagen & Becc and Tom

The great temptation for young artists has always been to try and be something they are not. To put on a costume so to speak, and play make believe. It’s a pitfall that Sahara beck spotted years back, and she ain’t going there.

Raised on the Sunshine Coast, Sahara has always had a decidedly single minded focus. At 14 she wrote and recorded her debut album before moving to Brisbane on her own to finish school and immerse herself in the city’s collaborative music community. New songs came in a rush, releasing 2013’s ‘You Could Be Happy’ EP, followed by last year’s ‘BLOOM’. Both releases captured her growing confidence and sense of self as an artist and a woman.

The response to those releases made ears prick up in Australia and overseas. But while her songwriting has grown, it’s been on stage that Sahara has truly taken some gigantic leaps.

Gone is the tentativeness of youth – replaced by a passion that captures her love of jazz and rock, as much as melt your heart tender moments. Working with an ever-evolving crew of musicians, she has toured the country and performed at countless festivals (Bluesfest, Queenscliff, BIGSOUND, The Planting, CMF) while sharing the stage with artists including Ben Lee, Art of Sleeping, Darren Middleton, Katie Noonan, Kate Ceberano and more.

Sáásta (‘Happy’ in Irish) are the most dynamic Irish band in Australia today, making a huge impact on the Irish music scene.

The band comprises multi-instrumentalists who have performed at the highest national level. They deliver pumping reels with phenomenal energy, and of course, all of your favourite Irish songs, as well as some superbly-penned original tunes & songs that will have you up and dancing in no time! Sásta have released two albums and have toured all over Australia. They have been as the preferred support act for the likes of Aslan, Mundy, Damien Dempsey, Sharon Shannon and Shane McGowan’s band ‘The Popes’ (formerly ‘The Pogues’).

Sáásta will tour Europe in 2016, in addition to their role as the live band for Ireland – The Show (a Riverdance style show)

Sáásta headlined the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Sydney to 30,000 people in 2014 and 2015.
