Ipswich Art Gallery has some fantastic exhibitions this year.

Currently on show are pieces from Australian Artist, Jan Nelson’s ‘Walking in tall grass’ collection. Where she uses a highly refined technical skill and the visual use of realism to create stunning portraiture. The collection is a series of meticulous paintings, where teenagers and children have been removed from their usual background, replaced with bold colour. The portraits capture adolescence and the hyper-awareness of your surroundings during that time. It really is spectacular seeing the paintings up close.

Also on offer is the exceptional ‘Behind the Lines’ political cartoon exhibition. A selection of 80 of the best cartoons from 39 cartoonists, this exhibition displays some of Australia’s most controversial cartoons that test the boundaries of free speech and the freedom of the press. Not only are they great drawings, they are sure to bring a smile, laugh or a grimace to your face!

There’s plenty to keep the kids occupied and right now they can let their imaginations run wild with the creative ‘Imagine this…’ concept.

Imagine this… is a hands-on studio space where children and families can imagine and make art together. Four inventive art works by Australian artists provide the inspiration and all the art materials are provided. It’s the perfect way to encourage children to explore an artist’s ideas and to stimulate their own imaginations.
