Life for volunteers at St Vincent de Paul, West Ipswich has been made that little bit more rewarding, courtesy of a $20,000 federal government grant.
Prior to receiving the grant volunteers and workers alike worked in a warehouse with an outdated fibreglass roof that leaked each time it rained.
The lack of space for volunteers to sort clothes also meant they were cramped amongst forklift activity, which was a safety hazard.
Working conditions have dramatically improved with air-conditioning, a separate sorting room for volunteers and a new roof and doors.
Warehouse worker John Byers said the renovations have eased the work load of both volunteers and warehouse staff alike and improved workplace health and safety conditions.
“With the new roof, it’s a lot cooler because we used to have a fibreglass roof with a skylight so it was really hot in here during the Ipswich summer,” Mr Byers said.
The warehouse, which services Ipswich, Boonah and surrounding suburbs will now be able to accommodate more donations with the increased space.
Similar organisations within the Ipswich and Somerset region can receive grants between $5000 to $20,000 under the Blair Stronger Communities Programme.
Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumman said the Blair Stronger Communities Programme provided invaluable support to local community groups and organisations.
“The Blair Stronger Communities Programme provides up to $150,000 worth of funding across Blair to local organisations for projects which improve community participation and contribute to the vibrancy and viability of local communities,” Mr Neumann said.
“I’m consistently impressed by the great work done by community groups across my electorate, and would urge anyone interested in applying for this funding to put themselves forward.”
Applications for this grant close August 21st. To register an expression of interest, please contact [email protected] or (07) 3201 5300.
