Avengers: Infinity War – 4.5/5 stars
The blockbuster event over 10 years and 18 films in the making, the HUGELY anticipated and colossally hyped Avengers: Infinity War is here.
Not only number 19 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the third Avengers flick or the superhero team-up to end all superhero team-ups, this culmination of everything and everyone involved since Robert Downey Jr. first put on the suit of iron and declared himself Iron Man in 2008’s first Marvel Studios film is quite literally, in regards to scale, ambition and execution, the biggest film of all time.
Featuring the most ensemble of casts, Downey and his founding Avengers Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Evans (Captain America) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) join the likes of Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and even the Guardians of the Galaxy led by Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord and Zoe Saldana’s Gamora all in the one film.
Boasting just under twenty-five major superheroes all converging together in the hopes of defeating the big bad Thanos (Josh Brolin), directors Anthony and Joe Russo (also responsible for the last two Captain America films) have pulled off the impossible, delivering a phenomenally entertaining epic full of emotion, humour and action with the gravest threat our MCU heroes have ever faced the basis for an incredibly impressive adventure akin to The Lord of the Rings meets Star Wars but even better than both.
When the intergalactic tyrant Thanos sets out to fulfil his destiny by collecting all six of the Infinity Stones (ancient artefacts of unimaginable power older than time itself), The Avengers, their allies and the Guardians must rally together quick to prevent the end of the universe. Able to twist his will on all reality any which way he desires, everything they have fought for previously has led to this moment. The fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.
This exceptional feat of filmmaking and storytelling is a must see film event so good you’ll be smiling the whole way through.
A Quiet Place – 5/5 Stars
Following a family of four forced to live in silence whilst constantly hiding from sightless creatures which hunt entirely by sound, A Quiet Place is the very same game-changing thriller anyone you know who has visited a cinema lately hasn’t been able to stop raving about. Directed, co-written and starring John Krasinski alongside his real life wife Emily Blunt (in their first project together), there’s a reason the self proclaimed king of horror Stephen King calls this “an extraordinary piece of work”.
The year is 2020. Most of Earth’s population has been slaughtered by monstrously large and mysterious creatures not of this world. Blind, but with hypersensitive hearing and incredible agility, they use their heightened hearing to locate and attack ANYTHING that emits noise, no matter how loud, always with the intent to kill.
The Abbott family spend their days silently scavenging for supplies throughout the abandoned town and communicating through sign language. Doing what they must to keep their children and soon to be newborn baby safe in a world full of murderous monsters hunting every sound they can hear, two parents (Krasinki/Blunt) must learn and teach the rules of survival as they evade death by being absolutely silent. With a child on the way and no clue on how to prevent certain massacre, now more than ever, they cannot make a sound.
Astonishingly intense with the suspense dial turned right up to eleven and certain scenes so quiet people around you will be too scared to munch on their movie snacks, the edge of your seat is the only place you’ll need with this film.
With real-life deaf actress Millicent Simmonds portraying the deaf young daughter in a breakout role too, you’ll be breaking all the rules as you loudly tell anyone who’ll listen what they are missing out on. No longer just ‘Jim from The Office’, John Krasinski has proven himself to be an incredibly gifted filmmaker who just brought us the best film of the year.
This demands to be seen in a crowded theatre.
