Orange is not the new blonde

Julianne Hough adds a bit of depth and contrast with her darker roots

Cool-toned blonde is in, warm and brassy blonde is definitely OUT. Sticking to these four guidelines will ensure your hair – and your bank balance – are healthy this summer.

There are two things that should not be orange – your spray tan or your blonde locks. This summer, we’ve got the lowdown on how to maintain the on-trend cool toned blonde, without ruining your hair.

1. Keep your roots dark

For a low-maintenance look keep your regrowth dark. Contrasting roots enhance both warm and cool complexions, so almost anyone suits this look. It’s a big bonus for blondes who are naturally brunette; embracing your natural roots will save you time and money!

2. Good shampoo/conditioner

One thing that baffles most hairdressers is that so many of their clients spend big bucks for a glamorous cut and colour, but skimp on a decent shampoo and conditioner. Supermarket hair products (for the most part) contain nasty chemicals and formulas that are bad for your hair and your hair colour. This is especially bad for blondes, who need to use a good quality blonde shampoo (either silver or blue toned) to ward off those unwanted brassy colours.

Most importantly, bleaching is not the friendliest process, so invest in a nourishing shampoo and conditioner to bring back some life after excessively lightening your locks.

Ask your hairdresser’s recommendations on what shampoos and conditioners you should use.

3. Olaplex, Olaplex, Olaplex!

Ah, Olaplex.. without this magic in a bottle, it’s likely that many women would have no hair left! Olaplex is a bond multiplier, meaning it activates with the colour, restructuring your hair at the same time as the colour. Gone are the days when going from brown to blonde meant snapped and brittle hair. Olaplex fixes that, so ask your hairdresser to use it during the bleaching process. Purchase a bottle of Hair Perfector No 3 to use as a weekly treatment and it will continue to strengthen your hair between appointments.

4. Patience

So you’ve seen Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner go from black tresses to white blonde hair overnight and you’re thinking to yourself, “aw yeah, I could do that!”, forgetting that you are not a multi-millionaire celebrity with wizards for hairdressers.

Good hair takes time, effort and patience. If you’re not wanting to spend hours in the hairdresser chair (or don’t feel like paying hundreds and hundreds of dollars), slowly lightening your hair with foils and gradually going lighter each appointment is your best bet.
