This Mother’s Day, Ipswich City Council and Springfield Lakes Nature Care Inc (SLNCI) encourage residents to create positive, lasting memories with their Mum’s by planting a tree.
Tree’s for Mum Day will be held across two Ipswich locations on Sunday, the 14th of May.
Now in its fifth year, the Council will host the event from 9.00am to 11.00am at George Palmer Park, Silkstone, so residents create a living and growing legacy to share with or honour their mothers or mother-like people.
In addition to this, newly formed environmental group SLNCI will host their first Tree’s for Mum event from 2:00-3:00pm followed by afternoon tea at Promenade Park, Springfield Lakes.
SLNCI President and Ipswich Citizen of the Year Luise Manning said the event was important, especially to commemorate mothers who have passed away.
“Instead of feeling sad, we can do something constructive by planting trees in their honour,” Luise said.
“Mother’s Day is special to me because I was born on Mother’s Day and had a long road to motherhood myself.
“The event is also a nice opportunity to do something with your family by getting outside enjoying the parks and this great time of the year.”
Luise said the Tree’s for Mum events are timely following the destruction from Cyclone Debbie, with many trees across Ipswich and Springfield destroyed or knocked over.
“We need to replace what we’ve lost,” Luise said.
“We’ve lost beautiful gum trees (blue gums and spotted gums), and there are trees down in our playgrounds, in the lake and smashed across paths.”
