Stepping into the demanding role of Principal, St Peters Lutheran College Springfield following the departure of founding Principal Jill Lange-Mohr, Craig Schmidt knew he had big shoes to fill.
Having worked alongside Ms Lange-Mohr for more than six years as Deputy Principal and Head of Secondary School, it was decided that Mr Schmidt was the perfect person for the position, in competition with an impressive field of candidates from across the country.
“It was always the case that at some point in time, Jill would leave,” Mr Schmidt said.
“We’d worked for some time in making sure I was doing everything I could to learn more about the Principal role, and if it came to be that I was successful, there would be a very smooth transition.”
One of the most important projects Mr Schmidt will oversee as College Principal will be the construction of a new eight-classroom building in 2019, which is needed because of the continuous growth in enrolments.
During Mr Schmidt’s time at St Peters, the College has grown rapidly, from approximately 300 pupils to over 550 at present.
While ensuring that continuous growth remains with a target maximum of 900 pupils, one of the most important things to Mr Schmidt is ensuring the community keeps well-connected.
“I’ve worked at other P-12 schools, but in this one we’re very well-connected across our staff and students,” he said.
“Above all, my mission is to keep providing a rich learning journey for our students.. equipping them for the 21st Century.”
St Peters take pride in their objective to be a point of difference in education, offering Lutheran based learning with a holistic approach. The college also offers programs such as their Ironbark Outdoor Education Program, in which their Year 9 students spend five weeks learning core life skills without the distraction of modern technology.
Anyone interested in meeting Mr Schmidt or learning more about the opportunities available at St Peters Lutheran College Springfield may attend their next group tour on Wednesday 24 October 2018, 9am–10am.
