St Mary’s student Talitha Robertson and Defence Mentor Christina Page take part in the Kokoda Challenge on the Gold Coast

St Mary’s College students have shown they have the ‘Right Stuff’, taking part in the Kokoda Challenge during July, testing themselves against the elements and a demanding course, to demonstrate that school life is more than books and lessons; that it is about life challenges and showing up as well.

St Mary’s College is a progressive and inclusive Catholic College for girls, located in the hub of the Catholic Education precinct in Ipswich. The College has provided more than 150 years of education in the Mercy tradition. As a community, St Mary’s creates a nurturing and supportive environment where all learners can achieve success.

The College takes pride in a diverse range of opportunities for students: academic, vocational, cultural, mission and service, and sporting. There’s a strong belief that teaching a growth mindset motivates and generates productivity in young people, as well as enhancing relationships.

Recently, students and staff competed in the Kokoda Challenge at the Gold Coast. Teams consisted of four students and a staff member, embarking on a gruelling 52 km trek.

The conditions were incredibly adverse; students were faced with lightning, thunder, rain and an enormous amount of mud. This challenged and tested their strength and determination; however, through team work and encouragement they successfully completed the event. The experience was invaluable and each young woman described the event as empowering.

Participation in such a challenging and worthwhile activity has also inspired the College community, with many students nominating to enter the challenge next year.
