“Never let society’s expectations limit what you do,” Yassmin Abdel-Magied.
At just 25 years of age Yassmin Abdel-Magied has achieved so much and made a huge impact on our world, including being named the 2015 Queensland Young Australian of the year, but she is perhaps best known as the founder of ‘Youth Without Borders’, set up at age 16 when most teenagers aren’t thinking globally.
Yasmin and her team recognised the need to empower young people to work together on projects and make a difference in their own lives.
Yassmin is passionate about helping people achieve their full potential and enabling them to work for the needs of others.
“I love adventure, everything I do is for the love of adventure; whether that’s learning a new language, writing a book or starting an organisation,” Yassmin said.
Born in Sudan but raised in Australia, this Muslim woman is breaking down barriers and stereotypes every day.
In her book ‘Yassmins Story – Who Do You Think I Am?’ Yassmin describes how she got where she is today and her hopes for the world. Yassmin says it was one of the hardest things she’s ever done because of how honest she had to be. She wanted people to hear her story, mainly because “most people I spoke to had never heard the personal story from a young migrant Muslim girl before.”
With constant media attention surrounding the Muslim religion and culture she felt she had to speak up. But Yassmin is more than a face for the Muslim community though; she is an advocate for migrants, women breaking gender stereotypes and empowering young people.
Among her many skills and talents she has a degree in mechanical engineering and works on an oil rig, which is a very male dominated role.
“It can be mentally lonely but I enjoy my work and the people around you become your working family,” Yassmin said.
Yassmin’s book is available in bookstores now.
