The Ipswich Orchid & Bromeliad Society have announced their chosen charity ahead of their Orchid Spectacular in September.
The Ipswich Siblings Group, an initiative of Ipswich Alara, will receive proceeds from the sale of plants at the Orchid Spectacular.
The Ipswich Siblings Group supports children who have a family member with a disability or a chronic illness, helping them to connect with the community
Secretary of the Society Noelene Shultz says the Society has raised over $12,000 for various charities.
The Group is run by volunteers, relying on sponsorship and donations to fund activities for the children, aiming to relieve families financially, as many are already facing hospital and doctors bills.
Every year the Siblings Group takes its charges to the Broncos football games, and aims to secure tickets to the cricket and AFL.
At their Christmas in July event children participated in cooking classes, with everyone receiving presents and playing games.
The Group have also planned a camping trip in October to Paradise Country, as many of the children have never been camping before.
Joe Witt from St Vincent de Paul, says, “people come from all over and it’s a multicultural community. The kids are kids, they listen and they learn and it’s really important.”
Tania Moore, a representative of Alara, said people who work in the Group expressed that it made them feel less alone and connected to a community that led to friendships.
The Orchid Spectacular will be held on September 28 /29 at Silkstone State School. Admission is $4. Anyone wanting to donate to the Ipswich Siblings Group, please contact Tania Moore [email protected] or Trish Gibson [email protected].
